Just
as children need to come to their own understanding and be able to
express that understanding before they can develop true comprehension,
they also need to see what numbers mean, to visualize mathematical
processing, before they can easily deal with those numbers.
The Reading Clinic helps students having difficulty with math by giving
them a plan of attack. A step-by-step program where the student finds
success at each level before moving forward to the next.
Using the multisensory * On Cloud Nine® program developed by * Lindamood Bell Learning Processes®, students first become familiar
with math facts and arithmetical computation in a literally hands
on manner. They take apart and put together interlocking cubes to
get a clear picture of addition and subtraction, and then multiplication
and division. They put these cubes on a number line and develop a
sense of how their computations look in real space. As they become
familiar with these operations in concrete form, they can transfer
this knowledge to mental calculation and visual imaging.
Once students start to feel familiar with these basic skills, they
can start to think about which operation to use for a given situation.
Of course, being aware of the situation means having clear conceptual
imagery. Our tutors break down this process of understanding into
manageable stages during one-to-one sessions. When students can apply
their skills appropriately, their problem solving skills are strengthened,
and they see how to reason mathematically.
Finally, students move into ever more abstract and conceptual math,
as they develop the ability to analyze and then solve word problems.
With a solid understanding of basic principles, they can deal with
higher math at their grade level.
