Phonological Awareness: Setting the Stage for Learning to Read

Before children enter elementary school, they need to learn a set of concepts and skills related to language and its connection to print in order to be ready for reading instruction in school.

Concepts and skills that research tells us are fundamental for reading success are:

  • Letter knowledge – learn the names of the set of symbols used to represent speech in print, the alphabet.
  • Phonological awareness – develop an awareness of the link between speech and print i.e., speech is segmented into words, into syllables, and finally into units called phonemes – with these pieces of speech represented in print by letters.
  • Phonics – master a sequential set of letter-sound correspondences and how to read and spell combinations of letters.

Indeed, the two best school-entry predictors of how well children will learn to read in their first two years of instruction are letter knowledge and phonological awareness. That finding is part of a Report of the National Reading Panel commissioned by the U.S. Congress. The panel found that effective programs in phonological awareness instruction contributed significantly to reading and spelling development.

The Reading Clinic in Palo Alto is pleased to offer a program that will provide a systematic research-based approach to phonological awareness along with letter knowledge and introductory phonics.
