A safe environment is key to demonstrating to young children that learning to read can be fun. The Reading Clinic uses the Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing® Program to develop phonemic awareness. As they discover and label how they make sounds, our students use articulatory feedback (feeling) to separate and blend the individual sounds in syllables. When they understand how to sequence and identify individual sounds, or phonemes, the sound-symbol relationship is developed and students can begin to unravel the code.

At the same time as students are strengthening their phonetic processing, they also develop visual memory for letters, words and patterns in words with a modified version of the Seeing Stars® Program. Making a kinetic connection to letter formation, students use their finger to “write” in the air and on surfaces and begin creating mental images of letters and words. As they can recognize more sight words, students move more quickly through words on the page, and have less difficulty reproducing these words when they are spelling.
